Rage syndrome - Sudden unprovoked aggression, dilated pupils. Dog is confused and disoriented during and after attack.
Renal Agenesis - Also called Kidney Aplasia. Born with one or both kidneys missing.
Renal Cortical Hypoplasia - A condition where the cortex of one or both kidneys develops incompletely.
Renal Hypoplasia - A condition where the kidneys do not develop completely.
Renal Tubular Dysfunction - Impared function of the tubules of the kidney, which are the filtering structures.
Retinal dysplasia - a condition where the retina is malformed.
Retinal Dysplasia - Recessive inherited, congenital abnormality of the retina. If mild, the dog can often compensate well. Severe form results in blindness.
Schnauzer Comedo Syndrome - A skin condition producing scabs, blackheads, and other bumps on the back. Generally not a problem unless they get infected.
Scotty Cramp - Lack of serotonin, a neurotransmitter, which results in spastic contractions during exercise or excitement. Recessive.
Sebaceous - a small mass in the skin with a secretory lining and filled with a yellow waxy-like material
Sebaceous Adenitis - Also known as Granulomatous Sebaceous Adenitis. Scaling (dandruff), hair loss, and itching due to the loss of oil-producing glands in the skin. May be autoimmune.
Sebaceous Adenitis - Inflammation and eventual destruction of sebaceous glands, the oil-producing glands in the skin
Sebaceous Tumor - A tumor of the oil-producing glands of the skin.
Seborrhea - Skin disease causing flaking, bad odor, and either excessively dry or excessively oily skin.
Selective Immunoglobulin A (IgA) Deficiency - Low levels of specific antibodies, leading to decreased immune protection and recurrent infections.
Selective Immunoglobulin G (IgG) Deficiency - Low levels of specific antibodies, leading to decreased immune protection and recurrent infections.
Selective Immunoglobulin M (IgM) Deficiency - Deficiency of the IgM antibody, which is important in early immune response. Results in chronic infections.
Sertoli Cell Tumor - Affecting intact male, generally older dogs. Testicular tumor that, in some cases, secretes estrogen and produces female qualities. Most often develops in undescended testicle.
Short Skull - Abnormally short skull compared to the breed standard.
Short Spine - Abnormally short spine compared to the breed standard.
Short Tail - Abnormally short tail compared to the breed standard.
Shoulder Dysplasia - Looseness of the shoulder joint causing pain and difficulty walking.
Shoulder Joint Malformation - Generalized group of deformities of the shoulder joint.
Silica Uroliths - Stones that form in the bladder and/or urinary tract. Some believe corn gluten in the diet can cause them.
Spina Bifida - Malformation of the spinal column where it is not completely closed, allowing part of the spinal cord to protrude.
Spinal Cord Demyelination - Loss of protective covering over spinal nerves. Leads to incoordination and jerky movement.
Spinal Dysraphism - Spinal abnormality due to failure of the posterial neural arch to close.
Spinal Muscular Atrophy - a degeneration of parts of the spinal cord causing paralysis.
Spinal Osteochondrosis - Developmental abnormality of spinal column.
Splenic Torsion - Twisting of the spleen.
Spondylosis - Also called Spinal Osteoarthritis. Degeneration of the spinal column, often resulting in an immobilization of the vertebrae.
Squamous Cell Carcinoma - Malignant cancer of the skin.
Stenotic Nares - Narrowed or unusually small openings to the nose, causing difficulty breathing.
Sterile Pyogranuloma Syndrome - Autoimmune skin disease resulting in the formation of inflamed deep tissue and tiny abscesses, without any infection.
Stomatocytosis - Rare inherited disorder affecting blood cell permeability, typically causing red blood cells to burst (hemolytic anemia). Can also be associated with the malformation of cartilage.
Subaortic Stenosis - Narrowing of the outflow from the heart to the aorta. Causes increased work for the heart and can lead to congestive heart failure.
Subcorneal pustular dermatosis - a skin inflammation occurring between certain layers of the skin.
Superficial corneal ulcer - an erosion of the outer membrane and outer surface of the cornea.
Syringomyelia - Congenital spinal cord disorder causing the formation of expanding cysts in the spinal cord which slowly destroy the center of the cord.
Systemic Lupus Erythematosus - Autoimmune disease producing inflammation and connective tissue problems in the skin and organs.
Tetralogy of Fallot - Group of four developmental abnormalities: ventricular septal defect, right ventricular infundibular stenosis, misalignment of aortic valve, right ventricular hypertrophy.
Third Cervical Vertebra Anomaly - A malformation of one of the neck bones in the spinal column.
Thrombocytopathy - Malformation of platelets, which are important in blood clotting.
Thrombocytopenia - Reduction in the number of platelets, which can cause pinpoint hemorrhaging in the skin.
Thymic Atrophy - Decrease in size or production of the thymus, resulting in reduced t-cells which are necessary in immunological response.
Thyroiditis - Autoimmune inflammatory disease of the thymus.
Tracheal Hypoplasia - Trachea with weak and underdeveloped cartilage rings, resulting in difficulty breathing, wheezing, and chronic respiratory infections.
Type II Muscle Fiber Deficiency - Deficiency of Type II muscle fibers, resulting in quick fatigue and stiffness.
Ulcerative Colitis - Autoimmune disease causing inflammation of the lining of the colon. Can produce ulcers of the colon.
Ulcerative Keratitis - Corneal inflammation with accompanying corneal ulcers.
Umbilical Hernia - When the abdominal muscle tissue fails to close or strengthen completely after resorption of the umbilical cord.
Undershot jaw - A condition where the lower jaw is too long for the upper jaw, sometimes making chewing difficult.
Unexplained Fainting - Brief fainting with no obvious cause.
Ununited Anconeal Process - Also known as Elbow Dysplasia A developmental abnormality of one of the bones of the elbow joint causing pain.
Uric Acid Bladder Stones - Bladder stones formed from uric acid products.
Uterine Eclampsia - Convulsions during or after whelping.
Uveodermatological Syndrome - Also called Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada-like Syndrome. Painful autoimmune disease causing depigmentation, hair loss, and blindness.
Vaginal Hyperplasia - Excessive folding of vaginal tissue during estrus, often causing vaginal tissue to protrude.
Vasculitis - General term for group of diseases that cause inflammation of the blood vessels.
Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD) - Hole in the muscle wall between the two ventricles of the heart.
Westie armadillo syndrome - Severe thickening of the skin, typically triggered by inhalant allergies.
White dog shaker syndrome - Primarily occurs in white dogs. Results in loss of coordination, muscle tremors, rapid eye movement, particularly during periods of stress.
Zinc-responsive dermatosis - Abnormal, often scaly skin that clears up when treated with zinc.
