A Visitor asked the following question on 10/8/2005
My whippet struggle with itchy skin. They are constantly scratching or nibbling at itchy spots. They also both have trouble with the hair under their collars getting rubbed off. Any suggestions on how to improve their condition?

10/10/05 Since more than one Whippet is itching, I would lean towards dry skin or flea allergy dermatitis, ring worm, mange, or inhalant allergies such as grass, etc. You need to take them to your veterinarian to determine the cause of their itchiness. If it is determined that their skin is healthy and no external parasites are found, then bath them in coal tar shampoo to help sooth their skin and be careful not to bath them too often, since that will only dry out their skin. As for the collar rubbing off their hair, you might want to reconsider the type of collar you are using. Rolled leather or nylon collars tend not to rub off hair as much. Best of luck with your Whippet buddies. Mary
