A predetermined area works well.
Take puppy out on a leash to the spot you want puppy to start releiving itself. When puppy does its job, give a special treat and say, Good Job.
Continue to take puppy to this one spot which also makes for easy clean up.

Always take your puppy out to the place you want him to do his business when he wakes up, after playing and after eating. He'll soon learn - collies are SMART!
