A Visitor asked the following question on 3/29/2007
I have a 3 year old female mini dash. She is in her second week of being in heat. We introduced her yesterday to a male mini dash that is 18 months old (not far from 2 years old). She was constantly presenting herself and giving him ample opportunities to mount. He acted interested, sniffing, licking, following her around, and marking his territory everywhere she has dripped. The problem is he will not mount. This is his first experience with breeding. They spent about 6 1/2 hours together yesterday and nothing happened. What could be the problem?

It has been my experience that if breeding to an "unknown" dog, my males will take sometime getting to "know" that dog. Other dogs will not mount until they know that the female is really ready. I have a male maltese that will not mount until the "right" time and he produces everytime. Also some dogs are "private" about their business and they wont mount in front of a "crowd". One of my male doxies I have never seen tied to my females eventhough they are in the house but 63 days later I have pups. The other male doxie does not care if the entire town is watching he will tie.
Just give them time, he is old enough to know that he is a man.
