A Visitor asked the following question on 3/24/2007
I have four children(girls)ages 10 months, 4,7, and 12 years old. We want a small dog. I'm interested in a mini dachsund. I've heard they're not recommended for small children because of the dog's back; potential injury. Children can be taught how to handle the dog.Is this breed okay for kids? Also, are they barkers?

You are correct when you say you can teach a child how to handle a dog. The big thing with doxies is back issues due to their elongated body. You need to teach a child to lift them under the belly not by the front legs. They also should not get up on the couch as just by jumping off the couch they can slip a disk in their back.
As far as temperment, I think they are great for children. A doxie has alot of energy and is best suited for children that like to run and play.
They do bark at anything though. That is probably the downfall of a doxie.
