How can somebody get into showing dogs? I have a Shih Tzu and she is just the perfect dog. I've watched dog shows on TV like Crufts and Westminster, and it's awesome seeing all the different dogs and different breeds strutting their stuff, especially when you can tell the ones that really love it. My dog CarrieAnn is the same way... I can pose her and she'll stay, and she heels and struts around like a princess I think she would absolutely love doing that, and she's gorgeous and very well groomed. But I went to a dog show in a nearby city once, and I didn't even know how to talk to people there... they all seemed busy and I didn't want to bother them by asking stupid questions How does someone start?

First thing you need to do is make sure your dog is registered with the AKC, IF this is the venue you want to show your dog in. Only dogs that are AKC registered can show in an AKC show.

Next find a local Kennel Club and get involved. This is one of the best ways to learn about showing dogs.

Then find a good book about showing,...there is one called "Show Me!" which is excellent for beginners

Check out the National breed club for your breed, and find a local breed mentor. Be aware...that while you believe your dog is beautiful and perfect, ..... in comparison to the breed standard, they might not measure up. A breeder will be harsh about this, but it is better to know the truth than to put alot of effort into something and come home upset and disappointed because you did not do well.
