I'm posting this for my ex-wife who isn't too forum savy. She has a 13 year old Beagle who's not doing very well. We're not sure why, but she's lost her appetite and has lost a lot of weight. She's always been an overweight dog but lately, she's lost about 10 to 15 pounds. She recently had to start crating her when she's not home because she started going to the bathroom in the house frequently. She went to the vets a couple of weeks ago for some blood work but everything came back negative. The vet suggested a series of x-rays but told her they could cost between $300 and $700 depending on views, sedation of necessary, etc. It's my experience that she's beyond any sort of serious surgery because of her age. The vet has even suggested as much with regards to teeth cleaning etc. Sedation isn't worth the risk or whatever. Is there anything we can do? She's been on a very low calorie diet for several years now and I suggested changing foods to try and get her to eat. This is a dog who only a few months ago would find away to get on a table to steal whatever she could find. Any suggestions or thoughts? She has a lot of fatty tumors the vet elected to not have removed. They said they simply weren't causing her any problems and due to her age, she was better off leaving them alone.

The Xrays will be worth it, as it sounds very possible that your dog has cancer.

Contact other vet clinics and get some price options on Xrays, or even take her for a second opinion.
