Our Westie Tuffy 1 1/2 seems to have a chronic problem with anal gland odor. He has been to the vet for extraction, but the vet says that they (the dog ) can empty this gland at will or when excited or frightened. In his case it would be from excitement, he is a happy and very friendly guy. Is this a common issue with westies? We previously had a Brittany and this was never a problem.

Anal glands that smell can be a problem in any breed at any time. I have had this problem in a yorkie, a westie, a rottweiler, etc... Has nothing to do with breed.
