A Visitor asked the following question on 8/27/2007
Is an umbilical hernia in weimaraner considered to be a hereditary condition. If your female has one, can you still breed her?
Also if your weim has blue eyes after 7 months of age, is this rare and should you consider breeding even if she has an umbilical hernia?

The umbilical hernia is a condition that happens in all breeds. It is simple to fix and as far as I know is not Hereditary. I had a litter of 9 with one having this. Your dog can live out it's life, with this or the best thing is to have it fixed if you spay the dog. I wouldn't be too concerned about the eyes still being blue at 7 months. It took mine almost a year to completely change. If they do stay blue the AKC considers this a falt, and only a concern if you are showing. I myself don't even consider breeding a dog until it reaches 2 yrs. This is when I feel a female dog is completely mature.
