I've been online researching information about Skye's and came across your name and email address. Quick background, several months ago we bought a Skye from a person who had kept her in a kennel for several years. Her name is Pickles, and in general is all the things we read about that a Skye is supposed to be, and we all love her. I would almost call it a rescue because when we got her she had some flea allergy problems, and other things, but she looks good now. We trimmed her hair and it does not cover her eyes, so we know she can see us well. In general, she is very playful and happy and full of life and a sweet spirit. She's about five years old, and never had puppies. However, she has one very unnerving habit that we don't know is s sign of a deeper problem with her, or if it's just the way Skye's "talk." Basically, when she is laying down, if we get close to her head with our head she will let out a low, throaty grrrrrr sound. That may last only a few seconds, or about 15 seconds. She's only 25 pounds, but has a good set of strong Skye teeth and jaws, so it is pretty unnerving. She doesn't bare her fangs, and has never lunged at us or tried to bite when she does this, but it definitely sounds like she's warnign us to "back off." I can't understand this, as she does it to everyone in the family. I'm hoping you can shed some light on this rather bizarre behavior. It makes no sense because nothing is being done to trigger it, and it only happens when she is laying down...she never growls like this outside, etc. Hope you can shed some light on this....we've grown to love her, but I'm worried that to avoid any chance of this growling going to the biting stage if children were around we might have to put her to sleep which would crush this family because we really do love her. Normally she is a real hoot and fun to have around.
