I read somewhere on the internet about a nursing mother's nipples getting hard, hot and swollen. I didn't think much of it at the time, but now my mother has those symptoms. What is this and what do I do about it?

That is a sure sign of mastitis, the mother's teat has an infection in the milk gland. The puppies should not be allowed to suck off that gland and you need to get the mother dog to the vet immediately. The milk is bad in that teat and can make your pups very sick. It can also spread to the other glands, which will leave your babies with no milk and you would then have to supplement b/c the mother won't be able to feed them. Call your vet in the morning and get her in. She must get vet care at this point.

This does sound like mastitis. sometimes the breast does also get hard and wrinkly looking, this can be dangerous for the mom and she needs to be off to the vet.
