When a female is in heat, her vagina swells, you may or may not see blood. Reason being, some females keep themselves extremely clean. So you might see her licking herself alot. If she is in heat and ready to breed, she will, what we call flag the male. She will swish her tail to one side or the other, not wagging, but her tail will actually lay over on it's side. She will allow the male to mount her. Once they make a tie, I recommend you sit down with them and make sure that they don't try to pull apart as they can hurt themselves or in some cases they may begin to fight. A tie can last 2 minutes and up to about 45 min. Usually about 10 - 15 minutes is usual for the Shih Tzu breed. However anything is possible. Hope this helps.

Some females also have "silent heats" that you cannot see any signes. But here is what I recommend. Order some estrus test strips from Revivalanimalhealth.com, or see if your vet has any. THEN, every morning and evening, take a white paper towel and blot her vulva. When you see a tinge of pink, that day is called "The first show of blood". From there try to breed on day 9, 11 and 13 for the Shih-Tzu. Use the estrus strips to see if she is ready. Good luck, and my phone number is on here. Please call if you have any questions. Karen
