A Visitor asked the following question on 3/28/2006
4 months ago we adopted Oscar a 4yrs old Shih Tzu he was totally unwanted and had only been feed on kitchen scraps and left over take away foods,no social skills and totally untrained. He is now well on the way to behaving and has come a long was on social skills. He weighed 6.1 kilos when we got him although we don't think we have been over feeding him he has gradually put on weight and now weighs 10 kilos
we also had him casterated. would that make a difference to his weight any advise please.

The answer is Yes! Having him neutered is no different than having a female spayed, they gain weight and spread a little wider. If not kept active as he ages he may even get heavier. We own one that weighed 14 lbs and after being neutered, a year later weighed 20 lbs. Keeping him active will help but the end result is they do get a bit heavier after being done. You don't find it so much in a puppy that has been neutered, but very common in older boys.
