A Visitor asked the following question on 12/28/2005
My 9yo female Shuh Tzu first presented health problems about one month ago. Presenting symptoms are: profuse drooling, vomiting, refusal to eat most of the time, weight loss, teeth grinding; head pressing, staring, gumming, unknown barking at times, swollen nodes at base of mandible, dificulty swallowing, dificulty breathing. refuses to take medication orally, she knows every trick to hide and spit up pills and will vomit the pills up. She has had numerous xrays-normal, full blood work-normal, liver-normal, 2 abscessed teeth were extracted and healed okay but presenting symptoms continue, amoxicillan, bronchodialtor, some orange liquid for nauseau, prilosic otc. When she does eat, she does so eagerly, but then vomits it up later, drinks copious amts of water, bowel movements are normal and regular, uriniates regularly, lethargic, depressed. She has been fed dry dog food in the past and carry out dog treats are her favorites along with pig ears, does not get those anymore. Cooked chicken, hamburger, turkey only eats very little of, won't eat rice. She used to love anything with tomato sauce, doesn't get that anymore. She has been seen by 3 different vets, all are dumfounded as is a breeder I talked to. She is currently being treated as if she has gastritus/ulcer? She has been in the hospital over night twice now. At this point the vet says maybe she needs to see a specialist for more invasive treatment examination. I am sorry to say that that is not an option financially, ultrasounds, endoscopic, biopsies...$$$ and who is to say anything will be found? So it has come to the point that this dog will either starve to death slowly or we put her down?, hwat a shame being only 9yo. Any comments? thank you.

I have never heard of anything of this kind. Had anything in her life changed about the time she first got sick? Have you tried feeding her baby food meat? Usually, you can mix it with plain yogurt and it can be very soothing to a sensitive stomach. One other thing to help her maintain the vitamins and minerals she needs is to get a tube of Nutri-Cal. This is a high caloric supplement that is for sick dogs, nursing dogs and puppies. I wouldn't be caught dead without it. Also with all the vomiting, syringe feeding her PediaLyte will help keep her electrolytes in balance. Sometimes when they get out of balance, just as with people, it can cause a variety of symptoms that one would never think would ever happen. The excessive drinking of water would indicate to me anyway that she is dehydrated and that would be from the vomiting. The Pedialyte(and you can use WalMart brand) should help with that. We also use Pepto Bismol for the stomach irritation. The pig ears could of started the stoma

Has she gotten hit in the jaw area? Has the vet done xrays for a brain tumor? Is it possible that she has had a stroke? One other thing, if she is throwing up the pills, see if the vet won't give you liquids instead. That would be easier on her stomach and less likely to throw up. It would also be absorbed into her blood stream quicker than a pill would. Pam
