A Visitor asked the following question on 12/21/2005
My 5 yr old female Shih Tzu has all the sudden dropped her tail. She has always carried it up & over her back until about 2 weeks ago. I've only had her 6 months (I adopted her from SPCA humane society - she was picked up as a stray). But in the whole time I've had her she just recently dropped it. I've checked it for any soreness & she doesn't appear have any pain in it. I've checked her stool for worms - no worms. She isn't constipated. The only time she raises her tail is briefly if someone knocks on the door or while she is peeing or pooping. So I know she can still raise it. Could it be from depression. I have her groomed regularly but I can't really pin it on any thing that has to do with her grooming. Since she still had it raised until about 2 days after her regular bath & groom. Any information anyone has I would greatly appreciate it. If it could be a medical problem I will take her to my vet but seems silly to take her in to him just because she suddenly dropped her tail. Thanks so much.

Shih Tzus don't always keep their tails up. There is no medical reason so don't worry. Has there been alot of extra activity at your home over the past couple of weeks? Have you been gone alot more than usual? She could be depressed if she has been left alone more than usual or if there has been more people in and about than she has been use to. Sounds like she is unhappy about something. The key will be to figure out what has changed over the past couple of weeks and hopefully be able to put life for her back to the way it was before she began drooping her tail. Hope this helps.
