Our Shih Tzu is very loving, outgoing and playful. However, yesterday while in the car, firetrucks responding to a fire screamed past the car with lights and sirens. Our dog was so scared she cried and literally ripped a whole in my shirt from scratching. After that happened, she is very nervous and frightened and isnt herself. Is there anything I can do to help her get over this?

9/16/05 Is she eating and drinking in her usual manner before the fire truck incident? The best thing you can do for a dog that has been scared like that is to ignore the nervous behavior she exhibits. I know this sounds cruel, but trust me, when you hold them and coddle them, you reenforce the very behavior you are actually trying to get rid of. I wasn't home during a really bad thunder/lightening storm and if you are from the south, you know how bad they can be. I only had four babies at the time, the oldest being 3 years old, she is 9 now, anyway, a pine tree outside my den, where the dogs were, was about 10 feet from the house was hit by lightening. Well, you can imagine the sound and the electricity in the air and the whole terrifying experience. I didn't even know the tree had been hit, until it began to die. However, the next storm that came through Miss Maric(my oldest dog) began crying and shaking and pretty much freaking out. I felt so sorry for her I sat in the chair the entire s Pam
