12/26/04 Shelties tend to live pretty long, I believe the average age for a sheltie is like 15 or 16 yrs, 12 seems to be a minium and I've know of a bunch that have lived 17 year +. Shelties are a long coated breed and they do have what is called a double coat (which means they have undercoat and then a layer of hair over that). Most shelties don't get their full coat in until they are 3 years but a lot of that just depends on the individual and the lines that the dog is from. Shelties require regular grooming, they are not a heavy shedding breed but their hair will matt if not taken care of on a regular basis. Ashley

3/12/05 Currently in Ontario Canada, there is a 26 year old Shetland sheepdog bitch from a kennel that has long since retired. This girl is doing well and turns 26 in the next month I believe. No major health problems, just some eye sight and hearing loss. Still apparently runs and plays ball. However the average age lifespan of a Shetland Sheepdog is 12-14 years. B.
