A Visitor asked the following question on 12/11/2007
My 5 month old male Shiba was going to the bathroom outside with no problem. He would jump at the door, bark, and then sit down and wait for us to put his leash on to go outside. My husband was at home for the first two months with the puppy, on sick leave, but recently went back to work. He still comes home to let the puppy out throughout the day, but is not there all day anymore. In the evening and on weekends, the puppy is with us in the house. We take him out to the bathroom, but he will sometimes come back in and then pee or poop in the house. What can we do to correct this behavior?

Your dog's whole rountine has changed now with your husband home, and he may be having some confusion about where/when it is appropriate to potty. Whenever you encounter a housebreaking issue, go back to square one and retrain the dog. Go back to crating/confining your dog whenever you cannot keep your eyes on him 110%. Take him out every hour until he is successful, and then praise/treat for making a correct decision. Avoid yelling at your puppy after he has made a mistake. Yelling just teaches them to be sneaky about it.
