I have a 4 month old wheaten that is still not getting the hang of potty training. I take him out every few hours and yet he still has accidents even in his crate. Is this normal puppy behavior or is something more going on?

1/16/08 Wheaten puppies are so excited to get outside to be with their owners that they often forget to actually finish their business outside. I have observed some puppies actually go through the motions and not actually finish, because they want to get back to playing. Be prepared to stay outside as long as it takes for the puppy to finish outside. Make sure the puppy is actually urinating outside would be the first thing. I would also limit access to water an hour or so before you crate the puppy for any length of time and of course take outside prior to crating. Praise, Praise, Praise when the puppy is appropriate by urinating etc outside. Your puppy will recognize the positive reinforcement and repeat the behavior. If the puppy does not have fewer and fewer accidents, then have the puppy evaluated by your vet for possible renal issues. Kelly & Mark
