im havin an argument with my girlfriends dad about why the ridgeback has the ridge on its back bread into the dog could you please answer this!

Hello,
The ridge came from the half-wild Hottentot tribe dogs in South Afica which had the ridge. The First European settlers interbreeding and crossbreeding between these native dogs and those of the settlers. In due course, the Hottentot dog established the foundation stock of our present day Rhodesian Ridgeback and played the most important part in the development and ultimate characteristics of the breed.
So yes, it was breed into them from the African dog!
