Does trimming the hair help to thicken and grow longer?

No, sorry but that's not going to help an animal with a thin or short coat. The coat length and thickness is all up to genetics. Now if you hand strip a coat it can change it's texture though and can change the color that is visiable, say a silver dog will grow back as a banded salt and pepper.
