A Visitor asked the following question on 7/16/2006
We adopted a 1 1/2 year old Lhasa from a shelter (the owner gave her up during divorce) and she doesn't seem to know how to "play" (fetch, etc.) She is active and likes to go for walks, but we'd like to teach her some other thing s to promote healthy activity. Also, she has a tendency to sometimes stretch out and drag her torso and legs (almost as if they don't work) using her upper body strength to pull herself along. She walks just fine, and only does this on occassion. Is this odd? How do we/can/should we correct this behaviour?

Hi..."Belly scooching" is a normal thing Lhasas do to stretch, scent mark carpet, and just be silly! There is nothing wrong or abnormal about this, do not bother to discipline it! This is probably the best time to teach something new...when she's in her silly-me mood!
Teaching new tricks does depend on whether or not this girl LIKES to play games! You can try a variety of sqeeky toys to find one she really responds to, but Lhasas are NOT beagles or laboradors...she may not ever be interested in "fetching". You can try, instead, teaching her all the names of her toys...Lhasas have a great capacity for vocabulary and have been known to follow intricate directions through the house to find "woobie"!
