A Visitor asked the following question on 7/3/2004
my 14 year old lhasa, who appears in great health, has recently been diagnozed with oral cancer, the diagnosis is not good, 30 - 60 days, possibly 6 months to a year.......
he's a great guy, and at this point reiki and nutritional supplements seem the only way to go...if they operated, they will need to remove 1/2 of this jaw.......
any suggestions??? thanks abs

I think if they operated to remove half his jaw it would do more harm to his quality of life then good. He is an older dog who has had many great years with you. I would enjoy the time you have left with him. Keep the nutritional supplements comming. Ask you vet about any other supportive treatments you may try. Good luck with him, I wish you the best!

It is always a shame when an otherwise healthy, vigorous friend becomes seriously ill! We are only beginning to learn what causes these types of lesions in people (nicotine, etc) and how to best treat them.Oral/bone surgery can be very difficult to recover from, and should only be attempted by a well-qualified specialist.Palace dog breeds seem especially susceptible to illness associated with second-hand smoking (asthma, lung/throat cancer, bronchitis.
