What is the difference between these two sytles of labs? Is one larger in weight than the other? I keep hearing that the English has a more square head and a stockier build, but my vet says the American is larger. The breeder of my daughter's 5 yr old dog (at 115 lbs!) says she is not overweight, that it's normal for the English style.

4/8/05 American's are larger in the back and leg height. They are field and water dogs. They have lighter bones etc... English are blockier in head and body. Thicker bones and shorter. Mainly for water, they do good in field too. However, they are shorter and have a harder time going through brush. Their weights run about the same. The build makes up the difference in both types. A good way to check over weight or not is to look at the ribs. Can you see them? They shouldn't be sunken in yet you should still see the rib outline. If you don't they are over. It all depends on the size of the dogs body as to how heavy they will be. My labs are all diff. I breed both types and have pictures of each type. Email if you are interested.
