Japanese Chin do shed as any long haired dog. I find that it is easier to clean after long hair than short hair that sticks into cloth. There is seasonal shedding but when that has passes there is no more hair loss than my own hair brush. If they are groomed regularly, the keep up is not difficult. As in all breeds an intact female will shed more than a male.

More information that might help is that when the dog is bathed and soaped up, gently brush his coat and it will help remove excess hair that is going to fall out anyway. Daily brushing helps as well. ALways gently brush your dogs hair and then follow up with a comb to see if you might have missed any mats behind the ears.
