A Visitor asked the following question on 6/24/2004
Our 7 year old giant schnauzer was just diagnosed with melanoma. The tumor was on her front paw. Should we keep doing surgeries? What are your experiences? The VET said this is relatively common in giant schnauzers. Help!

I am sorry I did not see this post long ago to post to the original poster but if this response saves the life of a dog, I am sure there will be worth posting at this late date.
This guys vet knows what many do not and that is TOE CANCER is common in Giants. However, it is not malanoma, it is a lesser form of cancer called squamous cell carcinoma. Dogs usually live from it if the portion necessary is removed. Toe, foot, leg. Obviously the longer one waits the worse it gets but they never miss a toe so do not hesitate if there is reason to believe this is the problem. Tell your vets... spread the word. Yes! Toe cancer!
