A Visitor asked the following question on 12/11/2006
I am thinking of getting a dog, possibly a great dane. I was wondering how much food they eat a day? And since I work during the day, is it ok to crate them, being so big? Is it ok to leave them alone, wandering the apartment? Thanks!

First off I would tell you to get a written statement from your landlord that you will be aloud to keep a great dane in your apartment. Then YES you will need to crate him/her unless you don't want to have an apartment when you get home :)
Success with crating will depend on how long your puppy needs to stay crated. The rule of thumb is 1 hour per month the puppy is old PLUS one. The longest a 8 week old puppy would be able to stay crated would be 3 hours. This is a rule of thumb and not written in stone. It would also depend on how well you pottied the pup prior to crating. If not done properly then no, it will not work.
I crate train all of my dogs until they are old enough and trained enough to be aloud to roam free. It also helps prepare them for trips where they will have to stay crated some of the time.
