A Visitor asked the following question on 1/16/2006
My husband is talking of getting a Great Dane.
We have a very large back yard35'x20'. We live in a wooded area. We have a son who is 12 yrs.old. He likes dogs. I would like to know what diseases/illnesses are common among the breed, if any, to the breed. Approx. how much do they eat from pup to full grown? How do we know if we have a pedigree? And a list of AKC breeders in Northern Virginia. Please.
Thanks.

35x20 Is NOT very big, especially for a Dane, and of course you would want to fence in your yard, the most common things in Danes are , bloat, bone problems, hip dysplasia, etc...as pups you should feed them 3+ times per day, as they get older twice per day, I personally leave food down at all times after puppyhood, they usually eat when theyre hungry. Dont feed a food high in protein or calcium, it will cause your Dane to grow TOO fast. They grow enough on their own.
