A Visitor asked the following question on 3/9/2008
I am considering a gsd as a backpacking companion. I hike an average of 15 to miles per day. What is an acceptable age for a gsd to hike these distances on a repetitive basis? Is one year old too young?

The German Shepherd Dog should be at least 1 year, preferably 16 months before taking on this type of activity. The dog must be in shape to achieve distances as stated and depending upon the altitude, the dog will need to be acclimated. Keep in mind that the GSD can cover huge distances AND often will exhaust themselves before quitting - so you must pay attention to your dog.
