The history of the German sheperd breed, were they bred for any specific purpose? If so what was that purpose and is that purpose visible today?

Yes they were bred to herd sheep, originally. And yes it is obvious in the breed today. Not only did they herd the sheep but they also protected them from animals (ones that look just like them (wolves)) So a lot of times they are dog aggressive, not always but it is something that is instinctual in them.The GSD is a very intelligent breed and can do almost any job that is given to them.
