can you breed a pup on their first heat

8/9/07 I would highly suggest waiting until the 2nd heat. You / your female can have major problems breeding the female dachshunds on their first heat. Joe Shasta Dachshunds Joe

10/27/07 Dogs become completely grown at differing ages, due to size of the breed. My vet told me that the reason you shouldn't breed on 1st heat is that the dachshund's bones aren't completely done growing at that age = 6-9 months. After the 1st heat, the long bones cap over and stop growing. That's the reason you shouldn't breed before 2nd heat. Some suggest waiting till your female is 2 years. John & Karen
