I guess I can't speak for everyone but I can assure you my dogs all five at current, know who I am dark or not. In the over twenty two years I've had Dobes this is a new one for me.

i think i know what you mean by this, dobermanns have a natural instinct to be wary of strangers and if in the dark whilst they are preoccupied/busy sniffing around etc. and you are in an open space and have moved without them realising they will instinctively want to know who that person/noise is if not to protect their owner who they know is somewhere in the vicinity.remember they will have your scent in the air already but they too sometimes are mistaken but due to their protective nature will always bark/growl if uncertain in their minds just to be on the safe side (reliable dogs they are).I regulary play hide and seek with my dogs and believe it or not i can creep up on and surprise them at times!! lol

i think i know what you mean by this although this would happen with most breeds!.
