A Visitor asked the following question on 7/5/2006
hello
My name is Scott and i am interested in the cavalier as a dog breed.
We recently lost our dog of 16 years a cockapoo who fought through a
couple different illness's. I love the cavalier's breed's characteristics
but all the health issues concern me. I understand dogs will
unfortunately pass on before most of us would like but this breed particularly
appears to be full of problems. The MVD and paralysis issues scare me
the most. The more i read up the more it seems these dogs seem to die
early or suffer through some rather tough illnesses. If I find a
breeder that complies with these standards is the cavalier still doomed to
poor health? I live in buffalo NY so im not sure if you know of any good
breeders near me . Any information you could provide me would be
greatly appreciated

If you find the right breeder, your concerns will go away. My vet has not seen the MVD problem in over 10 years. Cavalier breeders have worked very hard at breeding-out these defects and have been very successful. I breed for health and temperment. Breeders like myself, visit the specialists every 6 months to make sure there are not problems. If there are, that dog is NOT bred. Someone you should talk to in depth is Julie Drago of Coosa Creek Cavaliers. She also has an ad on this web site. She and I work together in breeding-out these defects and have done so back to the great grandparents. If you talk to anyone who owns a Cavalier they will tell you that they would never have another breed. I hope this helps, Dawn Bradford kingscourtcavaliers.com
