A Visitor asked the following question on 8/29/2006
I just adopted a male, CKC registered Shar Pei from the local Humane Society. He had to be surrendered due to extreme allergies in his original home. He is a 15 month old non-neutered male,(part of the agreement on adoption was to have him neutered) I have only had him for 24 hours, but he is very letargic and spends most of his time sleeping. We were told to let him come to us, but it is even difficult to get him on leash to go out to eliminate. He is a beautiful dog, and we fell in love with him as soon as we saw him. He apparently was well socialized in his prior home, very well behaved and polite, etc. Are there any suggestions about acclimatizing him to my home without undue stress to him? Really love this dog already in Thunder Bay

9/6/06 You should take him to your vet and have a complete health work up done, including a kidney function test. The lethargy could be due to an underlying health problem other than the allergies, or may be due to depression from the changes in his life. Try to put him on a dog food that is free of wheat and soy as a starter to get control of his allergies. You might also talk to your vet about allergy testing to determine whether his allergies are food vs inhalant allergies. Donna
