A Visitor asked the following question on 4/8/2005
How long are border collies in heat? And when is the right time to breed her?

4/9/05 BCs can vary on the length that they are in heat. Mostly, they are in heat for about 21 days. As for when the best time to breed them is, are you meaning age of the dog or on which day of the heat cycle? The best age is normally about 3 years old, to make sure they have all of their health tests (mainly CERF). As for day of the heat cycle, that depends on your dog. It could be anywhere from the first day to the last day. If you only get one chance to breed her during the heat cycle, you might think about going to your Vet and having smears taken followed by blood tests to know right when your bitch ovulates, which is the best time to breed her.
