I would appreciate any and all information regarding H.O.D. (Hypertrophic Osteodystrophy), a bone/growth plate disorder. My 4 month old puppy has been diagnosed and I would like to know the long term prognosis. What are some triggers that cause this genetic predispositon to rear it's ugly head? We love him so much. Please help.

Prognosis is guarded, because the response to treatment is highly variable. Generally mildly affected dogs recover, while severely affected dogs often require euthanization. Whether the disorder is genetic is debatable in most breeds, though Weimeraners, who have a more severe form of HOD than other breeds, have a known mode of inheritance. Common triggers are fast growth (generally due to high dietary calcium levels) and the distemper vaccine. Here are several good articles on HOD:
