please tell me they are not a hunting dog and that they are a great dog to have

They are not a "hunting" dog, they are a "hunters helper". We have 2 cows and lots of chickens, now the Puppies up to 20 months or so will chase the chickens, and if teased enough the adults will also follow the pups. But who can deny "eye candy".
We have taught our mastiffs to round up the cows when they get out. But if you have adopted a mix breed with a hunting dog, I cannot say you would not have a problem. And if it is an adult, you do not know what it was taught, you may not be able to train that out of them.
