A Visitor asked the following question on 7/24/2006
I have a belgium malinois that is having a problem with this black grainy, similiar to sand
substance on her back. We don't have any black
soil in our back yard that she would roll around
in. Do you have any idea what it is? I am able
to brush it off of her skin, but I don't know if
I am removing something that she might need. It
doesn't make any sense.

Is she itching alot? Black stuff in the fur is sometimes flea poop. You can rake her coat with a fine tooth comb and see if you can spot any fleas. She can have fleas even if she is on a flea preventative. Thats the only thing I can think of. If it seems to affect her, play it safe and take her to the vet. Try giving her some omega fatty acids and brewers yeast tabs. Might make her coat look better. You should be able to find them at any pet supply store. Good luck.
