I would recommend using a name brand commercial food such as Iams, Purina, Science Diet, or Royal Canin. You will do well with any of these brands. Avoid generic brand, cheaper dog foods, as their protein sources are usually vegetable instead of animal-based. Don't get overly excited about the hype of "natural" diets, home-made diets, or vegetable-based diets (dogs are carnivores, not herbivores - however, for an overweight dog who recieves dog food, you can also feed carrots or green beans to help fill the dog up). If you have any questions about the diet you would like to feed your new puppy, discuss this topic with your veterinarian.
