We have two females, one comes into heat every 6 1/2 months like clockwork. Our other female is in heat about every 8 to 9 months. Some dogs might be shorter. They will spot blood at the beginning of their heat cycle and be in full heat ready to breed in 5-7 days from the first spotting. This will last about 7-10 days. All thing vary with individual dogs.

The last answer was great. Just to add, not all females will drip blood. Even those who do will not necessarily drip at the very beginning of their heat. Therefore, I would recommend looking for enlargement of the vulva as well (they usually start to "look big back there").
