12/2/05 Hi, My very fist question would be, "Is your boy registered with AKC (American Kennel Club)." If not, please have him neutered and just love him. If so, my advice would be to then look into his pedigree look for abbreviations like CH. (champion), ROM (register of merit)for examples. Visit with your breeder and discuss your intentions for him talk to them about his strengths as well as his weaknesses. If your breeder isn't available, take him to some local dog shows and ask an akita exhibitor to look him over and evaluate him for you. Most will be honest with you but you must be willing to hear that he may not be of breeding quality. If he is deemed a quality guy, the next step is to get him entered into some shows and get to know some other breeders. Please know that a dog is not a stud just because he is purebred and intact. Each breed has an AKC standard that is much like a blueprint for breeders to follow and sometimes it takes someone else besides ourselves to evaluate our Laurie
