Is Yogurt Good For Dogs?

As with us humans, there has been an increasing interest in the use of natural foods and supplements to enhance nutritional balance in dogs. One food that comes up often is yogurt, and there are many who sing the praises of yogurt as a nutritional supplement.

What Yogurt Contains
In addition to being a natural source of calcium, yogurt contains a strain of lactobacillus acidophilus (L. acidophilus) which is a “probiotic,” or healthy bacteria. L. acidophilus naturally inhabits both the intestinal tract, and it does several good things for dogs (and us, as well). First, it assists in both folic acid and niacin production, which are both necessary for good health, especially in pregnant dogs. It also helps remove amino acids (protein building blocks) from bile acids in the digestive system. Perhaps the most notable benefit of L. acidophilus, however, is the protection it provides from other “bad” bacteria. As it breaks down nutrients, L. acidophilus releases both hydrogen peroxide and lactic acid, which can destroy or inhibit harmful bacteria. Additionally, since many bad bacteria feed on the same nutrients as L. acidophilus, a healthy digestive culture can simply starve off other bacteria. -Read the whole article

Flat-Coated Retriever Information
The Flat-Coated Retriever was developed in Great Britain in the late 1800's with the advent of the breachcock shotgun requiring a need for a faster retriever. Dogs used in developement were Setters, Spaniels, Collie, St. John's Water Dog, and Wavy Coated Retriever. The Flat-Coated Retriever was deveoped from the start to be a dual-purpose breed as both a working retriever and show dog. The Flat-Coated Retriever is a medium sized active dog that shows power without lumber and raciness without weediness. They are natural retrievers and make an excellent family companion hunting retriever for upland game as well as waterfowl. (They love water.) Flat-Coated Retrievers are slow to mature and often carry on their enthusiam for life (exhibited by a constant wagging tail) and playfullness into their late years. Flat-Coated Retrievers should be trained early with a "light" hand and consistency. They are eager to please but do not respond well to harsh punishment. If left un-trained and un-attended the Flat-Coat could develope into a destructive dog. Being a retriever they like to carry things in their mouths and need plenty of toys to chew. The Flat-Coated Retriever is a family/companion working retriever that is at it's best with family interaction and a job to do. With the proper traing and family interaction the Flat-Coated Retriever will make an excellent addition to the family.

Dog Question of the Week

Some answers to last week's question:
Do you prefer big dogs or small dogs, and why?
This Week's Question:
What breed do you think is the cutest?
I perfer big dogs on the whole, because I think they are more adaptable, rough-and-ready, easily trained and are better with children, and simply easier to live with. But larger dogs are not for everyone and are likely to make a small home seem even smaller.
