Riverstead Bernese are bred for health, movement and structure, but above all for their superior temperament. My dogs have larger than life personalities and huge egos. With the increased interest in BMD's there are more puppy mills and backyard breeders. As a not for profit, Private BMD Rescue Home I see an ever increasing number of poor quality dogs of less than quality bloodlines. Poor temperament is one of the biggest problems I seee and increase in. Bernese are a gentle, sensitive breed. If they are not raised in a loving, involved environment or if they start out in a kennel with an unhappy, dejected, sad Mother, or in a Pet Shop living in a glass box they can be shy, nervous and reserved. These are not quality traits. A shy puppy becomes a fearful adolescent which in turn becomes an aggressive fear biting adult. I am a registered breeder and member in good standing with the CKC and the Bernese Mountain Dog Club of Ontario. My breeding dogs are of Canadian, American and Swiss Champion bloodlines. I am active in conformation showing, draft and obedience work. My dogs are all pets first and reside in my home. There are no kennel dogs here at Riverstead. Puppies are home raised and well socialized. They are registered at nine weeks on a NON-BREEDING contract and guaranteed for two years against hereditary disorders with six weeks free medical insurance through Pet Secure, a thirty pound bag of quality food, micro-chipped, rear dew claws removed and vaccinated. I do not ship puppies and do not approve a family 100% until we have met at my home. I must be sure you will be the right family for one of my precious pups. Riverstead Rescue Home for Bernese, a "not for profit" private rescue is the only one in the Atlantic Provinces. I have a yahoo group for my puppy people to share stories or ask questions and an annual Berner Bash here at my home, for Riverstead Dogs and their families. Please research before you buy. Expect as much from your breeder as they "should" expect from you. Speak with other owners of their dogs, ask questions.
